Five Minutes with the President

Here at the Council of Management, we thought it would be nice to give a little behind the scenes glimpse of what goes on, and what each role involves. Over the next couple of months, we will be interviewing each member of the Council of Management.

First up, we obviously couldn’t start with anyone else, is our interview with our President Karl Brown… he provides a brief insight into what he does for us and in particular the work he is doing for the city of Bristol.

What better way to decide whether you want to run for being on the Council of Management next year than getting a behind the scenes glimpse of what goes on!

What is your role on the Council of Management?

I am the current President of the Bristol Junior of Chamber.

What does your role involve?

As President of the BJC I arrange the speakers and venues for our monthly members’ meetings.  I also set the key themes for the current BJC year and the main key theme of my presidency is the issue of improving social mobility in our city and country.

I also represent the BJC when interacting with key city leaders in Bristol such as the Bristol Mayor.

Why did you want to be involved in the Council of Management?

I originally joined the Council of Management in 2009 as Chair of Education and Skills.  The reason for my joining is that I am passionate about giving back to my home city of Bristol and in particular the young people of Bristol.

What opportunities has this brought to you or new skills have you developed?

Being on the Council of Management has been fantastic in honing skills such as public speaking, chairing meetings and project management.  It has also been a fantastic opportunity to interact with many of the city’s leaders.

What has been the best thing about being on the Council of Management?

Dwight D. Eisenhower once said “We, the people, elect leaders not to rule but to serve”.  The best thing about being on the Council of Management has been the chance to serve BJC members and to serve the City of Bristol.

Don’t forget to pop by the website next week for our quick five minute interview with our Vice-President, the one and only Ben St Quintin!
