Emma Carter’s Reflection of a Year as BJC President

April 23, 2025

As I step down as Bristol Junior Chamber President tonight, I’ve been reflecting on the past year and trying to put into words just how incredible it has been.

When I first joined BJC, I never imagined that I would one day serve as President  but here I am, having nearly completed my term as BJC President 2024 – 2025. It has been an absolute privilege, and one I will always remain grateful for.

This year has been full of learning, connection, and unforgettable experiences, many moments that have reminded me why BJC is such a special organisation.

Personal Highlights from the Year

Some of the moments that have made this year so special include:

  • The BJC Big Help Out – We supported multiple charities across Bristol (Tree Aid, Penny Brohn, InHope as well as many others), with members volunteering their time and energy in a range of projects. From making soup for the homeless to planting trees to parking cars at an event, it was incredible to see everyone come together with such enthusiasm and team spirit. The BJC Big Help Out truly captured the heart of BJC giving back while building connections.
  • Exchange with Wirtschaftsjunioren Hannover – Our visit to Hannover was unforgettable. Meeting the Deputy Mayor and discussing the new Bristol committee system offered valuable insights, while enjoying Lake Mascheefest, touring the city, and sharing donor kebabs brought laughter, fun, and lasting memories. It was the perfect blend of learning, culture, and friendship.
  • A fireside chat with the Rt Hon Darren Jones MP – Hosting former BJC member Darren at our members’ dinner was inspiring. The conversation sparked meaningful discussions (and laughter) that continued long after the evening ended.
  • Launching our new BJC values, website, and members’ area – This year we formalised our values: leadership, inclusivity, and community. Launching the new website and members’ area marked an exciting milestone, making it easier for everyone to engage, access resources, and stay connected.
  • General election hustings – As a politics graduate, hosting a general elections hustings was something I was very excited about. Representatives from all major political parties joined us offering members a unique chance to engage in debate, ask questions, and explore different perspectives. The evening was a reminder of the importance of engaging the young professional voice in our city’s future.
  • International Women’s Day panel – Our first panel, featuring Donna Speed MBA, Gavin Marshall, and Imogen Franklin, celebrated inspiring voices from across business and the community. The discussion on equality, leadership, and opportunity sparked meaningful conversations from the panel and our audience.
  • Business West Bristol Advisory Committee – Serving alongside local business leaders to champion the voices of young professionals has been a highlight. It was rewarding to help shape decisions and ensure the perspectives of emerging professionals were heard.
  • Incredible speakers and events – From Ben Hardy, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Mark Kelly, Bristol Sport,  Bryony Roberts, We the Curious, Laura Aviles,Bristol Film, Paul Sullivan, Six o Clock Gin, Chris Garrard, Resilient Healthcare Teams,  Amy Kington Community of Purpose, to Ed Rowberry, Bristol and Bath Regional Capital, our speakers shared insights and inspiration that enriched our members’ experiences and encouraged growth.
  • Supporting the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta – Contributing to the long-term sustainability of this iconic event and enjoying the Night Glow with members was a truly memorable moment –  celebrating together while giving back to our city.

In total, we hosted 91 events this year, spanning business and networking, culture and heritage, sport, education, EDI, and our flagship programmes. From touring businesses to volunteering with charities, from learning from incredible speakers to celebrating together, it has been a year full of growth, connection, and unforgettable memories.

Thank you to the Council of Management

This year would not have been possible without the incredible energy, passion, and dedication of the Council of Management. They delivered so much for our members, going above and beyond to make every event, initiative, and programme a success.

Their hard work behind the scenes ensured that members had meaningful, memorable experiences throughout the year. I am so grateful for their guidance, creativity, and unwavering support,  they truly made this year extraordinary.

Thank you for everything you’ve done to bring this year to life and for making such a positive impact on BJC and its members.
