A year ago, Bristol Junior Chamber awarded a £2,000 grant to Spear Bristol through our fund with Quartet Community Foundation.
The funding was designed to support the delivery of the Spear Programme, a structured six-week coaching programme helping 16 – 24-year-olds overcome barriers to employment and build sustainable futures.
Twelve months on, we can clearly see the difference that investment has made.
What the Grant Enabled
Our funding contributed to the delivery of five six-week training programmes in Bristol. While it did not cover the full cost of each cohort, it supported essential elements including trainee travel costs and celebration events, both critical in ensuring accessibility and recognising achievement.
Each cohort typically supports 8 – 15 young people, many of whom are not in education, employment or training, at the start of the programme and facing significant personal and structural challenges.
Measurable, Lasting Outcomes
The impact of the Spear model continues to be exceptional:
- Over 80% of participants are in employment or further training 12 months after completing the programme
- Drop-out rates remain very low
- More than 230 young people in Bristol have now received coaching since the project launched
This is not short-term intervention. It is long-term change.
Beyond individual outcomes, this work contributes to Bristol’s wider economy, helping young people move from uncertainty into stability, confidence and contribution.
A Story of Transformation
One young woman shared how, before joining Spear, she had dropped out of her A-Levels and felt lost, unsure she would ever achieve her ambition of going to university.
Through the programme, she rebuilt her routine, confidence and belief. She went on to complete an Access to Higher Education course in Psychology, Sociology and Politics, achieving a distinction in her first assignment and is now applying to study Criminology at university.
Her words capture the true impact of this work:
“The programme helped me to believe in myself, my future and my career and I truly wouldn’t be where I am now without the help of everyone at Spear.”
Why This Matters
At Bristol Junior Chamber, our Quartet Fund exists to support training and education initiatives that give young people real opportunities. Spear Bristol’s work aligns perfectly with that mission combining structured coaching with accountability, aspiration and long-term support.
A year on, we are proud that our funding has contributed to sustainable, measurable impact in our city.
Strategic philanthropy even at modest levels can unlock significant change when delivered with the right organisations.
